Suspects in murder of Cancun union leader captured in Mexico City

Cancun, Q.R. — Three suspects related to the broad daylight murder of a Cancun union leader have been returned to the city. On Friday, 21 year old Ángel Yair “N”, 34 year old Arnulfo “N” and 47 year old Óscar Guillermo “N” were arrested in Mexico City.

They have since been transferred back to Cancun where they will face charges of aggravated homicide. According to local authorities, the three men arrived in Cancun August 1 and began watching their target Mario “N”. They stayed at a hotel in Cancun one night before moving into a rented apartment until August 4, the day they killed Mario “N”, who according to police, had been shot seven times while behind the wheel of his vehicle.

The Cancun apartment they rented online was managed by Óscar Guillermo “N”, one of the three arrested suspects. After the shooting, the three suspects headed to a hotel in Playa del Carmen where they stayed until August 8 before boarding a flight at the Tulum International bound for Mexico City.

Police say all three men were captured in a coordinated effort between the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), the Secretariat of National Defense (Defense), Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), Attorney General’s Office of the Republic (FGR), National Guard (GN), Attorney General’s Office (FGJ) and Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC), both from Mexico City.

According to police, Ángel Yair “N” is the alleged mastermind behind the murder of the union leader Mario “N”. They also say Arnulfo “N” and Óscar Guillermo “N” were his accomplices in August 4 shooting death of Mario “N” who was inside his vehicle at a car dealership at the time of the shooting.

All three were returned to Cancun on a 2:00 a.m. flight Saturday morning.

The three suspects were arrested in the Venustiano Carranza neighborhood of Mexico City. Two of them were found wearing the same clothes they wore in other crimes.

“Ángel Yair “N” was wearing the same cap he was wearing at the time he took the life of the union leader, while Arnulfo “N”, who has an outstanding arrest warrant for the crime of aggravated robbery which occurred in March 2025, was wearing the same pants he wore on the day of the events.

“As for Óscar Guillermo “N,” he was the person in charge of hiring the hitmen, offering them 50,000 pesos, plus travel, food and lodging expenses. They were also asked to carry out two more murders but he never paid.”

Police reported in a statement that “on the afternoon of August 4, Ángel Yair “N”, carrying a fast food delivery backpack, deprived Mario “N” of life with 7 impacts of a 0.45 mm caliber firearm in a parking lot of Supermanzana 42, of Cancun while his accomplice Arnulfo “N”, who was driving the motorcycle, waited for him to flee the scene.

“After committing the murder, the suspects abandoned the motorcycle and the delivery backpack on a walkway in Superblock 27. The backpack contained sweatshirts, face masks and helmets used by the alleged attackers, which were seized by the investigating officers.

The three suspects are seen here being escorted to an armored FGE vehicle outside Cancun International.

“Field, technical, and office investigations establish that Ángel Yair “N” and Arnulfo “N” traveled from Mexico City to Cancun on August 1 of this year, staying at a hotel in the city center. They subsequently moved to a rented apartment August 2 through a digital website managed by Oscar Guillermo “N” from the nation’s capital.

“From the moment they arrived in Cancun until the day of the events, these individuals conducted patrols to locate the workplace and learn about the movements of the victim, Mario “N.”

Security was heavy as vehicles followed the FGE truck from the airport to the base in Cancun.

“After committing the murder on August 4, the gunmen left the apartment and headed to Playa del Carmen, where they spent the night in a hotel. The next day, they boarded a flight from Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport to Mexico City.”

Meanwhile, agents from the Quintana Roo FGE searched the apartment where the three men were staying, where they located the murder weapon, a 0.45 mm caliber weapon. According to the micro comparative ballistics test, tests gave a positive result with the cartridges collected by the field forensic experts at the crime scene.

They are seen here being escorted again from the armored FGE truck to the building.

Following their arrest by the Interinstitutional Group in Mexico City, Ángel Yair “N”, Arnulfo “N” and Óscar Guillermo “N” were transferred to Cancun where they will be placed at the disposal of a judge to face trial for the crime of aggravated homicide against Mario “N”.
