Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — One person died in a single vehicle accident north of Playa del Carmen Friday. The male driver was traveling from the city of Chetumal to Cancun when he is alleged to have fallen asleep behind the wheel.

The driver, reported to be in his late 40s, was found dead at the scene by paramedics. The accident happened on the federal highway near Punta Maroma Friday morning. Emergency services were notified of the accident around 7:30 a.m. by passing motorists who reported watching the van take the corner at excessive speed.
First responders arrived to a white delivery van that had rolled off the highway and into the ditch. The front windshield was completely smashed outward. Responders searched the inside of the van where they located the deceased body of the driver.

According to preliminary reports, the man was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. Traffic was heavily affected for several hours while medical personnel removed the deceased and a tow truck arrived for the van.
