Marina personnel escort Mahahual fishing vessel to port

Mahahual, Q.R. — Marina personnel escorted a Mahahual fishing vessel to land Friday. The boat was escorted after requesting assistance due to an overheated engine.

In a statement, the Secretaría de Marina said that fishing vessel Chalchinichoacan was located in waters approximately one kilometer from Mahahual. The crew were unable to return to shore due to an overheated engine.

“Members of the Navy, through the Mexican Navy acting as Coast Guard, assisted a fishing boat that suffered an emergency due to overheating of its engines, near the Fishermen’s Wharf in Mahahual, Quintana Roo,” the Secretaria de Marina reported.

“The report was handled by the Fifth Naval Region, coordinating the operation through the Naval Station for Search, Rescue and Maritime Surveillance (ENSAR) in Chetumal and the Eleventh Naval Zone.

“The incident occurred approximately one kilometer east of the dock where the fishing vessel called Chalchinichoacan requested assistance due to mechanical failures that put its crew at risk.

“In immediate response, a Defender-type vessel was ordered to set sail with specialized personnel. Upon arriving at the site, naval elements provided water to cool the engines and stabilize the operation of the vessel.

“Once the vessel was operational, the naval personnel escorted Chalchinichoacan until it arrived safely at the port. This action prevented further risks for both the crew and the vessel.”
