Man swept away by current drowns off Veracruz beach

Boca del Rio, Veracruz — A man was pronounced dead on a Veracruz beach after an evening swim with his son. The man, identified only as a 37-year-old tourist from Mexico City, went for an evening swim with his son when the incident happened.

Elements of the Municipal Police of Boca del Río were called to the beach shortly after 8:00 p.m. when the pair entered the water at Playa Hermosa for a swim. Both were immediately swept away by the strong currents.

Local media reported the pair were at the beach all day, however, when authorities were clearing the beach of people for the night, the pair went for one last swim.

An on-duty lifeguard was able to rescue the boy, a minor, however, the father died by drowning. He was pulled from the sea but unresponsive to resuscitation efforts and was declared dead.
