Judge hands down 50 year sentence for Cozumel kidnapping

Cozumel, Q.R. — A man convicted of aggravated kidnapping has been sentenced to 50 years. On Wednesday, a judge sentenced Edgar Javier “N” for the May 2020 kidnapping that took place on the island of Cozumel.

“The social representation presented evidence at a hearing before the jurisdictional body where they managed to demonstrate that a victim, whose identity was withheld, had been intercepted by four subjects who were aboard a vehicle.

“Those men deprived him of his freedom to transport him to a property located in the Emiliano Zapata neighborhood in the town of Cozumel where he was guarded by the now sentenced man.

“At a certain point, the victim managed to escape and request support from the police, and in coordination with elements of the Investigative Police, Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena), Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) and National Guard, they located the property and arrested Edgar Javier “N” in flagrante delicto.

“The convicted person received a 50-year prison sentence from the judge in addition to imposing a fine of 353,400 pesos,” the official statement read.
