Islander gunned down in Cozumel tourist area

Cozumel, Q.R. — A 35-year-old commission agent was shot to death Wednesday night in a tourist area of Cozumel. Municipal police and military personnel were at the scene of the shooting where they located a man laying face down on a sidewalk.

According to early reports, the shooting happened around 9:00 p.m. on a side street between a plaza and the Puerta Maya dock in the southern part of the island. More than a dozen shots were reported fired at the unnamed islander who worked as a commission agent for a Cozumel car rental company.

Responding authorities cordoned off the area where the man’s body was found. The man was located laying at the base of a set of white gates. Next to him was a scooter. He was wearing his company t-shirt at the time of the shooting. Several casings were lifted from the crime scene around vehicles parked in the area.

The area where the shooting took place is outfitted with four public security cameras that, according to available information, are not yet operational. Cozumel police have not commented on details surrounding the shooting, nor have they publicly identified the victim.
