Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Central island road work on Isla Mujeres is still ongoing but nearing completion. Dozens of construction workers have spent months on the project of replacing old stones and correcting roadway defaults.
The laborious project of revamping Colonio Centro was started in August and includes the replacement of paving stones as well as the correction of broken sidewalks and curbs. The project is set for completion in the first week of December.
The project also includes the repair of sidewalks and curbs, vehicular streams, dismantling and removal of existing vertical signs, placement of traffic and tourist signs, the securing of pedestrian areas and changing lighting with LED technology.
On Thursday, Isla Mujeres General Director of Public Works, Rosalva Carrillo Zárate, said while the work continues, some roads are being closed to traffic so workers can move forward with completing the streets.
Avenida Matamoros at Avenida Rueda Medina and Guerrero, Avenida Abasolo at Avenida Rueda Medina and Guerrero and Avenida Juárez at Avenida Matamoros and Abasolo will be closed until December 6 so crews can do corrective work that includes the re-leveling of sinkholes and manholes.
The work is part of a comprehensive rehabilitation project in the central area of the island, which began in August and is estimated to be fully finished in two weeks.
In a post, the H. Ayuntamiento de Isla Mujeres reported “Significant progress is reported in the work of Improving the Urban Image of the Center of the island, carried out by the Municipal Government of Isla Mujeres headed by Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde.
“In this regard, the Director of Public Works, Rosalva Carrillo Zárate, reported that the work began in August with the purpose of providing better services and a good image to the thousands of tourists who visit the island.
“The municipal official said that as a result of the work, roads will be closed from November 22 to December 6. The streets that will remain closed on the aforementioned dates are Avenida Matamoros between Avenida Rueda Medina and Guerrero, Avenida Abasolo, between Avenida Rueda Medina and Guerrero and Avenida Juárez, between Avenida Matamoros and Abasolo.”
