Garbage burn fanned by wind consumes palapa and vacant lot

Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — A group of Felipe Carrillo Puerto residents needed help to control a garbage burn that became out of control. While emergency services arrived, they were not able to save a palapa or vacant lot that was in the fire’s path.

Strong winds created a challenge Sunday for a group of residents trying to put out a wildfire. The fire started in the Cecilio Chi neighborhood of the town of Felipe Carrillo Puerto when an intentional garbage burn took a turn.

A pile of garbage was being burned on a private lot around 2:00 p.m. when strong winds fanned the small fire. Residents did their best to control the fast moving fire while they waited for the fire department.

Emergency services arrived at the intersection of 56th and 61st Streets to thick smoke and burning grass.

According to preliminary information, the fire was set by an individual person after clearing his lot of debris. Within minutes, his small garbage fire spread. By the time the flames were extinguished, the fire consumed a palapa and entire nearby vacant lot. There was no word on charges.
