Fonatur reports Palenque section of Maya Train has begun

Palenque, Chiapas — The general director of Fonatur has reported the start of the first section of Maya Train. Rogelio Jiménez Pons of Fonatur outlined the sections noting 228 kilometres of Section one from Palenque to Escárcega, 253 kilometres of Section two from Escárcega to Calkiní, 172 kilometres of Section three from Calkiní to Izamal and 257 kilometres of Section four from Izamal to Cancun.

“These sections have already started with clearing of land, fencing of rights of way, rehabilitation of 42 old stations, setting up work camps, construction of warehouses and offices, qualification of archaeological rescue crew, hydraulic works and works for the passage of fauna, recovery of rails and 531,166 sleepers for reuse in public spaces and social housing,” he detailed in a video.

He said with respect to the existing tracks, the first actions consist of dismantling 319 kilometers of railroad tracks along with the stripping and clearing of secondary vegetation, which has been done in accordance with Semarnat.

The central offices for each section are already being installed and the new stations of the system and their complementary works are being planned, in addition to starting with the manufacture of sleepers and ballast necessary to rehabilitate the tracks.

Jiménez Pons presented the formal start of the work from Palenque, Chiapas, where the old road is being built to install the new embankment and announced that to date, the companies that have been assigned the work have been dedicated to carrying out all the geophysical, anthropological and archaeological studies.
