Lázaro Cárdenas, Q. R. — A hotel palapa in the town of Kantunilkin caught fire over the first New Year weekend. The burning palapa had Kantunikin firemen at the scene around 3:00 p.m. Sunday.
The fire happened at a hotel on Andrés Quintana Roo Street which was closed at the time. Neighbors reported seeing smoke coming from a palapa on the property and called the fire department.
Firemen put out the small burning palapa and were able to prevent flames from spreading to other areas of the hotel. The damage was minimal.
Alejandro Erosa Betancourt, the Director of the Kantunikin Fire Department, said a firecracker was the suspected cause of the fire due to the celebration of Three Kings Day, however, they were still investigating the official cause.
