Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — Residents of Felipe Carrillo Puerto stopped dump trucks from passing on the road being constructed for Puerta al Mar. The large group of area residents blocked the road Wednesday morning saying the construction company in charge failed to purchase stone material from them as agreed.
According to President of the Ejidal Commissariat, Elías Beh Cituk, the company in charge of the construction of the Puerta al Mar project failed to comply with previous agreements with the ejidos of Felipe Carrillo Puerto to acquire the stone material from them.
In protest, the group stopped dump trucks from being able to pass.
“The company is not complying with what was established from the beginning of the project, that all benefits go to the ejido such as the acquisition of the stone material required for these projects,” Beh Cituk explained.
“After talks with those responsible for the project, it was determined that external material would no longer be brought in, but that they would be using what the ejido sold them in order to restore the work,” he added.
The ejidos had the road blocked for several hours, creating a long line of frustrated drivers. Once an agreement was reached, the block was lifted.
A road is currently being built to provide direct beach access for residents of Felipe Carrillo Puerto. The road is being constructed through part of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve to Vigía Chico.
