Cancun, Q.R. — Five tourists were transferred to hospital after a morning highway crash that left their driver dead. The accident happened shortly before 11:00 a.m. Saturday on a section of wet highway between Cancun and Puerto Morelos.
Witnesses called emergency services after seeing the van spin out of control and crash. Cancun firemen were part of the responding team after elements of National Guard requested their assistance to remove the trapped driver.
The deceased driver has not been publicly identified. Highway traffic was slow moving due to the crashed van and emergency vehicles.
The driver of the tourist van was transporting five people reported to all be from California when the accident happened. There are some media reports that witnesses told on-scene police the driver was speeding when he lost control and crashed.
It is not known what he crashed into. At the time of reporting, local authorities had not provided any official statement regarding the accident.
