Dozing driver invades lane sending two to hospital

Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — A near head-on collision between a semi and compact car has sent two to hospital. An ambulance transferred two people from inside the small car to hospital after the 10:00 a.m. collision Thursday along the federal 307 highway.

The accident happened on a section of the Chumpón-Muyil road when the driver of the semi is alleged to have swerved into the oncoming lane. The swerve, according to early information, was due to falling asleep behind the wheel.

Both vehicles were forced off the road. Passing motorists called 9-1-1 who responded with National Guard highway patrol and medical personnel. Once authorities arrived at the scene, firemen were requested to remove the trapped driver.

The compact car was heavily damaged in the near head-on collision. Both people from inside the car are reported to be in serious condition.
