Criminal leader’s ‘right arm’ captured in sting collecting Isla Mujeres extortion money

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — A suspect accused of extorting Isla Mujeres businesses has been formally charged. Francisco “N” was arrested and charged with aggravated extortion of a business in the Costa Mujeres area of the municipality.

According to a report by the State Attorney General (FGE), he is also accused of being the right arm of the leader who controlled extortions in the Continental Zone. That person, David “N”, has also been formally charged with extorting Isla Mujeres businesses.

The first FGE investigations determined that through threats, Francisco “N”, along with other people, was demanding money from managers of various businesses in order to allow them to operate without harm, the agency explained.

One of the victims, whose identity has been withheld, made a first payment of 7,000 pesos every 20 days and another of 1,500 pesos every Wednesday. It was that Wednesday payment collection by Francisco “N” that got him arrested.

After his capture in the Continental Zone of Isla Mujeres, the accused was placed at the disposal of the Public Ministry. A judge has ordered Francisco “N” to remain jailed for two years or however long his legal process lasts.

“For these crimes, Francisco “N” could face a penalty of up to 37 years and six months in prison,” the FGE added.
