Cozumel, Q.R. — The island of Cozumel hosted its first major event since the coronavirus pandemic put the region into lockdown. The Ninth Edition of Ironman 70.3 was held over the weekend with nearly 1,300 participants.
Holly Lawrence and Sam Long were the winners of the 9th edition of Ironman 70.3 Cozumel in the Women’s and Men’s categories, respectively. Cozumel mayor, Pedro Joaquín, congratulated the winners saying “A great recognition to all the triathletes who attended this sporting event of international stature.”
This year’s events included 1.9 km of swimming, 90 km of cycling and 21 km of running.
Although officials debated for months about hosting the annual event, authorities decided to go ahead, but under strict health and security measures. The Sunday event drew nearly 1,300 triathletes plus friends and family.
“These types of world-class sporting events allow progress in the economic and tourist reactivation of the island. We were prepared with protocols to protect our inhabitants and visitors,” added Joaquín Delbouis.
