Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Civil Protection says at least half a dozen people are being charged after more than 20 municipal fires were extinguished. Jorge Alberto Vázquez Oropeza, the Secretary of Civil Protection, Risk Prevention and Firefighters (SPC) says those facing charges were found intentionally burning without care.
That lack of safety during their intentional burns resulted in the spreading of the fires that required both municipal firemen and state forest firefighters.
Vázquez Oropeza says already this year, the SPC (Secretaría de Protección Civil, Prevención de Riesgos y Bomberos) of the municipality of Solidaridad has dealt with 27 fires. While some were caused naturally, most were the result of carelessness by property owners.
He said Civil Protection does not provide permits for that type of burning, however, property owners burn anyway. Vázquez Oropeza did not say what the charges would entail in the way of fines to those found guilty.
Last week alone Playa del Carmen firemen dealt with four larger-scale fires. Two were property fires and two were brush.
