Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Tren Maya round trips from Campeche to Cancun will be open to the public on inauguration day. Tickets can be purchased as of December 1, 2023 through operating Maya Train stations as well as online through the Tren Maya e-Ticket website.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Thursday that the Government of Mexico is preparing the start of operations of the first stage of the Maya Train on December 15. On that day, the section from Campeche to Cancún will be open to the public as a round trip.
He estimated that in the first days of operation, ticket sales will be in high demand, reiterating that ticket sales for the train will begin December 1st through the official Tren Maya ticket website.
Óscar David Lozano Águila, the General Director of Tren Maya, also said Maya Train tickets will be sold to the public through the operating train stations.
AMLO detailed that Maya Train service will continue to open in two additional stages. On December 31, 2023 the section from Cancun to Palenque will begin operating and that toward the end of February 2024, the entire train route will be operational.
The President explained that section 5 of Quintana Roo (Cancun to Tulum) represented a challenge due to caverns, cenotes and underground rivers.
“This section to Tulum, which is about 120 kilometers, 90 kilometers are viaducts, that is, a second level. The train goes up so that everything below is a wildlife passage and nothing is affected and this meant more time and more resources, but the purpose was not to destroy the territory. Caves, caverns, everything were taken care of,” he said.
