Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — A popular Puerto Morelos restaurant has been completely destroyed by fire after its palapa burned early Friday. Firemen and the Mexican army arrived to evacuate the restaurant’s of dozens of customers shortly after midnight.
Restaurant patrons were ushered into the street where they watched as the grass rooftop quickly turned into flames. Firemen worked feverishly for several hours to dose a quickly moving fire that was being fanned by strong winds.
Firemen fought an uphill battle as flames devoured the dry rooftop grass and wood frame structure.
The entire two-level restaurant was destroyed while the adjacent building was damaged. A total of 11 rooms belonging to the establishment were also reported burned. Personnel from Civil Protection were on scene for seveal hours working with firemen to determine the cause.
There were no injuries reported during the blaze, only substantial material damage. Authorities in Puerto Morelos are still investigating the origin of the fire.
