Broad daylight Cozumel restaurant murder believed drug related

Cozumel, Q.R. — Local authorities say they have begun an investigation into the broad daylight murder of an island man Saturday. The unnamed man was sitting inside a restaurant with his wife and young son when he was shot and killed.

Surveillance cameras captured the moment when an armed young male approaches the table with his arm extended and fires. The Cozumel victim was shot in the head. The man’s wife called for help, however, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooting happened around noon Saturday inside a Cozumel eatery on 65th Avenue. The shooter, who is believed to have been a paid hitman, was able to get away.

Local authorities have not said if they know the attacker seen on surveillance cameras, however, they have said the targeted shooting could be drug related.

In a brief notice Sunday, the State Attorney General of Quintana Roo reported starting an investigation into the Saturday homicide.

“The State Attorney General’s Office reports that it has initiated an investigation for the crime of qualified homicide to the detriment of a victim whose identity is withheld, which occurred in an establishment in Cozumel.

“Through the Prosecutor’s Office Specialized in Combating the Crime of Homicide, investigations and analysis of evidence collected at the scene were carried out in order to clarify this event.

“It should be noted that according to field and office investigations, this fact could be related to crimes in the form of drug dealing.

“This autonomous organization works in coordination with the different security authorities of the island to find the whereabouts of the person responsible for this unfortunate event that occurred in the Flores Magón 1 Colony.”
