Body of Isla Mujeres man found floating possibly identified

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — The body of a man found floating in the sea in the southern portion of Isla Mujeres remained unidentified for nearly two days, leaving authorities to release his photo in hopes of identifying him.

Authorities released the photo of the unidentified man on social media that Civil Protection director Merced Ortiz Maya said was between the age of 50 and 60. The photo was released after authorities failed to find a missing person’s report. There was also no claim made on the body.

However, since releasing his photo, the man has unofficially been identified as island resident James Rydell. Apparently Mr. Rydell was a long-time island resident. His body was discovered earlier this week floating in the sea off a cliff area along the southern tip of the island.

Authorities who attended the accident site said he was found wearing fins and a wetsuit and was without identification. There is no official word on the cause of death.
