Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — A broad daylight assault on Isla Mujeres beachgoers Sunday had police out in full force. Police began a search operation on the mainland of Isla Mujeres after the report of the assault at Isla Blanca.
According to information released, numerous people on the beach at Isla Blanca were assaulted at gun point Sunday. One of those assaulted is said to have been current military personnel enjoying a day off. Police arrived after 911 reports of an injured person by gunfire was made.
Those assaulted detailed to police that several armed individuals arrived at the beach by jetski where they got off and began robbing people. Reports say one man was physically assaulted for resisting the robbery. He was taken to hospital by his wife to be treated for his injuries.
The brazen Sunday afternoon robbery happened around 5:00 p.m. Police and military personnel began a search operation near a place called Rodal Santa Fátima III, where, according to local media, a criminal group is suspected to operate.
Preliminary information says six were responsible for the robbery. At least one shot was fired, grazing a beachgoer. Unofficial reports say the military man at the beach was stripped of his weapon.
Local authorities have not made any public comment on the incident.
In mid-May, the Secretary of Public Security, Lucio Hernández, announced additional security measures being taken around the state due to an increase in crime. One of the measures announced was the use of the Eagle 1 helicopter for air patrols.
