Mahahual, Q.R. — Additional members of National Guard have arrived in Mahahual to reinforce security at the request of residents who are concerned about the increase in crime.
The additional 100 members of the National Guard are making Mahahual home as they provide surveillance and the safekeeping of the town since an increase in crime has been a concern since the beginning of the year.
The military police will monitor rural areas after several reports of Central American drug planes landing near the state’s border were reported, along with the recent murder of a local Mahahual fisherman.
Police enforcement personnel will step up efforts to monitor the southern zone while searching for clandestine runways used in drug trafficking.
There are approximately 250 members of the National Guard currently stationed in Mahahual. Security efforts will be increased from the banks of the Rio Hondo border with Belize to the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto. The soldiers will join forces with elements of the Mexican Navy Secretariat and Municipal and State Police.
