Criminals posing as tourists kill Mahahual fisherman

Mahahual, Q.R. — Two Mahahual boatmen became victims of crime after one was killed and the other injured when they were hired for a tour.

The captain of a small fishing vessel was killed and his crew mate seriously injured after they were hired for a tour of the Mayan coast. The Mahahual fisherman was killed by two alleged South American men posing as tourists.

The men hired the vessel Ojitos del Mar for an expedition and, while walking through the reserve of Banco Chinchorro, the captain was killed and the second man injured with knife wounds, however, he managed to escape and swim to shore for help.

A search by elements of the navy lead to the discovery of the body of the captain. The injured man was transferred by ambulance to a Chetumal hospital. The vessel, Ojitos del Mar, was located by the navy near Punta Herrero.

No arrests were made, however, authorities say the boat was found without its engines.
