Progreso, Yucatan — The Navy of Mexico reports the location and subsequent rescue of 19 people aboard a makeshift raft. The raft was located off the Yucatan coast by a passing merchant ship crew.
The ship gave notice to authorities who were successful in locating the raft. Sitting on boards atop numerous Styrofoam bricks were 15 men and four women. The group had set sail from Cuba, bound for Miami.
They were intercepted after being reported by the merchant ship and located by elements of the Mexican navy. All 19 were transferred to the Port of Progreso and given medical attention before being transferred to National Migration Institute (INM) officers.
