Los Mochis Airport, Sinaloa — The Mexican Secretary of the Navy (Semar) has reported 14 personnel killed in a helicopter crash in northern Sinaloa. The helicopter was transporting 15 people when it crashed.

In a statement, Semar said the aircraft took off from the Los Mochis Airport earlier that day for the mountainous area of the municipality of Choix on the border with the state of Chihuahua. It was on its return flight to the airport that the deadly crash was reported.

The military helicopter went down in the area of Topolobampo. Emergency responders located the destroyed aircraft in a farmer’s field. Semar reported that 15 people were on the aircraft at the time of the crash. Fourteen of them lost their lives. One is receiving medical care.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador made mention of the crash in his early morning press conference. On his social networks, he sent condolences to relatives, colleagues and friends of the members of the Navy, while wishing recovery to the officer who is reported to be in serious condition.

Officials have not speculated on a possible cause for the crash.
