Cancun, Q. R. — More than 465,000 people along the Yucatan Peninsula were left without electricity Friday. The widespread power outage affected users in the states of Campeche, Yucatan and Quintana Roo.
In a statement from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), the mass blackout was caused by a strong electrical storm leaving 22 percent of its customers without power. The cuts were felt around 4:55 p.m. Friday when two 400-kilovites CFE high-voltage lines were damaged, the CFE reported.
They said that 97 percent of the electrical flow was restored in 51 minutes. The remaining three percent will be restored once the electrical storms end in the area that runs from Xbacab to Champotón.
