Whale shark season comes to an end for Holbox, Isla Contoy

Holbox, Q.R. — The season for whale shark sightings has officially come to an end for the Holbox, Isla Contoy, Isla Mujeres region.

According to Marcelo Cupul, president of la Asociación de Ecoturismo de Isla Mujeres, licensed tour operators were able to offer whale shark tours 95 percent of the days during the 2019 season due to favorable weather conditions.

He says that this week officially ends the whale shark season, in which there was a considerable number of tours provided for most vessels. He explained that of the 120 whale shark season days, local tour providers operated 95 percent of the time.

From now until May of 2020 however, 40 vessels will remain in waiting for the next whale shark tour season. Cupul says many of the boats will be transferred to dry docks until next year when the season resumes May 15.
