Three former Isla Mujeres City Council officials charged with embezzling 94.6 million

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Three former officials of Isla Mujeres City Council have been charged with embezzlement. The former mayor, identified only as Agapito N, was one of the three charged earlier this week.

Officials have said that the previous mayor, Agapito N, along with his treasurer at the time, Álvaro N and revenue director Armando N, “co-participated in the execution of various contracts with 19 companies.”

Audits of those 19 companies for supporting documentation came up empty handed, however, auditors did find a money trail of unjustified payments in excess of 94.6 million peso.

During the Monday hearing, prosecutors said that the 94.6 million “could be simulated, since no supporting document was found for compliance with the objectives of said agreements, however, the documents accredited economic transfers made to said companies, causing detriment to the municipal public administration”.

One of the accused, Alvaro N, stayed on as Director of Social Development during the Juan Carrillo Soberania administration, which ended in 2021.

Agapito N and his council members headed the municipality of Isla Mujeres from 2013 to 2016. A judge has ruled that although they will not be held in detention during their trials, they must remain in the state and sign in every few weeks.
