Merida, Yucatan — Three American women were killed Tuesday in a fatal highway accident outside Merida. The three adults died after being involved in a head on highway crash at kilometer 49 of the Kinchil-Celestún roadway.

A man who was found injured at the scene has since died in Merida hospital. The fourth deceased has been identified as the driver of the Yucatan-plated Hiace cargo unit involved in the deadly collision. Two people from inside his truck were also injured.

The three American women killed were found dead inside the Quintana Roo-plated Mitsubishi Outlander they were traveling in. A fourth person, an 8-year-old minor boy, was found alive but injured inside the car.

All four were from the city of Los Angeles. The group of Americans were reported to have left Quintana Roo earlier that day when they collided with the cargo truck in the state of Yucatan around 4:00 p.m. They were reportedly headed for the town of Celestún.

The minor American boy remains in protective care. One of the two from the cargo cab remains in serious condition. Both vehicles were completely destroyed.
