Taxi passenger killed and three others injured in Riviera Maya highway crash

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — A backseat taxi passenger was killed Saturday night when their vehicle was rear-ended on a section of Riviera Maya highway. Emergency services from Playa del Carmen were sent to the site where two vehicles were reported involved in an accident.

The accident included a Cancun airport taxi and a pickup truck. According to information from authorities at the scene, the driver of a Toyota Hilux pickup truck rear-ended the taxi.

Both vehicles collided in the southbound lane near the Sirenis Riviera Maya hotel retorno on a stretch of highway near the Playa del Carmen-Tulum municipal border. Early information indicates that the pickup truck was traveling at excessive speed when it rear-ended the Nissan Versa.

That Versa was a Cancun airport taxi carrying passengers. One person from in the back seat of the taxi was killed. A front seat passenger, a woman, along with the taxi driver, were both seriously injured.

The Cancun airport taxi was located by police still on the highway with its back end completely smashed inward. The pickup truck that rear ended the taxi crossed the central median and entered the oncoming lanes of traffic where it kept going until it came to a stop in highway vegetation.

Along the way, the truck collided with a CFE power pole, knocking it down. The driver of the vehicle was found injured, but alive.

Numerous police, National Guard vehicles and ambulances were at the scene of the wreck Saturday night. Three people were transferred to hospital, the driver of the pickup truck and two people from the airport taxi.

Firefighters were called in to aid in the removal of the deceased. The backseat passenger has been tentatively identified only as an adult male. Due to the car’s severe hit from the rear, he was found trapped inside.

The pickup crossed the highway and landed in a ditch on the opposite side of the accident scene. December 20, 2025.

Firemen used the jaws of life to cut him free. He is reported to have been a national tourist to the area. Details as to exactly how the taxi came to be rear-ended are not known. Police continue to investigate the accident that left one Riviera Maya tourist dead.
