Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Two men were shot in a targeted beach attack on Continental Isla Mujeres Tuesday. At least two armed men are reported to have approached the men on foot and opened fire before running off.
One man was shot in the head. The other was hit in the back and foot. Both were transferred to hospital. The man who was shot in the head was transferred first. He died shortly after being admitted to Cancun hospital. The second man continues to be treated.
The shooting happened around 11:30 a.m. on the edge of the hotel property. The two shot men were not hotel employees. They are reported to have been independent beach salesmen.
Police were sent to the hotel in response to several 9-1-1 calls regarding gunfire and men being shot. Numerous hotel guests either heard, or were witness to, the broad daylight shooting.
Both men were gunned down in the sand on the edge of a hotel property. Some hotel guests from deep inside the property told Riviera Maya News that they were in the pool when they heard gunfire and immediately ran to their room.
Municipal Police of Isla Mujeres were first on scene. There were no reports of injuries to guests or hotel staff in the targeted attack. The deceased has been identified only as being a 24-year-old male. The injured man has been identified as 43-year-old Luis Alonso “C”. Neither men were associated with the hotel.
In a public statement Tuesday, the State Attorney General (FGE) said they have begun an investigation. “The FGE has opened an investigation after the events recorded in a beach area of Costa Mujeres, located in the continental area of the municipality of Isla Mujeres, where two people were injured by a firearm projectile.
“Personnel from this agency are working to collect evidence that will be integrated into the investigation in order to clarify this event and find the person or persons responsible for these events.”
Police continue to search for those responsible. A motive for the shootings is not known.
