Search resumes for elderly man lost in Isla Mujeres jungle

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — The search for a 70-year-old man continues in the Continental Zone of Isla Mujeres. The man was reported missing Thursday by his wife after he entered the jungle and failed to return.

With the help of his wife, authorities were successful in locating his tricycle, which was found parked along the road at the end of Kabah Avenue. From there, he is known to have entered the thick jungle in search of wood.

Elements from the fire department, along with civil protection, police and the National Guard, have helped in trying to locate the elderly man they believe has become lost.

His wife, who accompanied him Thursday, said that her husband, 70-year-old José Chi Ruiz, went into the jungle to hunt for horquetas (V-topped sticks), but did not return. After three hours of being waiting for him, she contacted authorities.

Searchers began scouring the area between Avenida Químico Pastrana and Rancho Viejo where he usually searches for wood. However, their Thursday search came up empty handed.

The elderly man has been missing more than 30 hours. His family has said that he has diabetes and no vision in one eye. A drone will be used Friday in the continued search efforts for the man after their Thursday search was suspended due to a loss of daylight.
