Search and recovery team locate body of missing man from sunken Cozumel vessel

Cozumel, Q.R. — The body of an adult male reported missing Tuesday night has been recovered. The man, identified as Santos Guillén Jiménez, was found early Wednesday morning after the boat he was in sank.

The accident happened Tuesday afternoon when a group of 12 headed out to sea in a vessel for a birthday celebration. While at sea, a heavy storm of wind and rain hit the region, causing the boat to sink.

Preliminary reports from Tuesday said that an exact number of people on board was not clear, but that there were at least nine people on board when the vessel Bucefalos sank. All nine were taken to hospital. One adult male was reported as missing.

Authorities have provided an update that there were 12 people on board the boat when it sank. A search for the missing man was started Tuesday evening but was suspended shortly before 10:00 p.m. due to the heavy rains.

The search and recovery team resumed at 7:00 a.m. Wednesday, locating the body of the missing man about an hour after they started their second search. He was located near the site where the boat sank.

The boat was on its way back to Cozumel when the storm hit. Reports say that Santos Guillén Jiménez was a Cozumel Transit city worker.
