Cancun, Q.R. — Ecology authorities in Cancun say they still have nesting turtles even though the season is officially over. Fernando Haro, the Director of Ecology in Benito Juarez, says the city still has sea turtles arriving to nest on beaches.
He says the official nesting season ended in October, however, they are still recording the arrival of green, hawksbill, flatback and loggerhead turtles.
He says Cancun is an important nesting site for turtles and the municipal government works closely with conservation organizations to protect these nests and ensure the survival of the hatchlings.
These species are protected by law and are essential to the balance of the marine ecosystem. The sea turtle protection program in Cancun includes nest surveillance and monitoring, relocation of endangered nests, and environmental education for the community.
Thanks to these efforts, the survival rate of hatchlings has increased and the habitat of these iconic species has been protected. The sea turtle nesting season in Cancun runs from May to October, and the last nests are expected to hatch in the coming weeks.
