Cancun, Q.R. — Two men believed responsible for the broad daylight murder of an Isla Mujeres officer have been taken into custody. In a press release, the Attorney General of the State has reported the arrest of Rubén G and Geovanny S “accused in the homicide of a public servant of the Municipality of Isla Mujeres.”
On August 11, senior Isla Mujeres officer Pedro Abirán Fuentes Cruz was shot to death while outside a private home in SM 41 of Cancun. He died on the sidewalk outside the home. At the time, police scoured the area for those responsible.
The FGE says that an investigation including C5 city surveillance cameras showed that on that day, the victim attended an appointment that he had previously agreed to with two people outside a home.
Minutes after the meeting, the victim went to the trunk of his vehicle and removed a package which he handed to one of the subjects who immediately took out a firearm and shot him. The two subjects then boarded a get away vehicle that was parked a few meters away.
Police finally located the getaway vehicle September 3 which, the FGE explained, lead to its occupants being interviewed. Drugs and a firearm were found and the two inside were arrested.
Police were then able to confirm that the vehicle was the same used in the murder. The FGE added that Rubén G is also being investigated for his probable participation in two other recent homicides in the municipality of Benito Juárez (Cancun).
