Riviera Maya hotel worker struck by bus dies in marked crosswalk

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — A woman died Tuesday night after being struck by a bus outside a Riviera Maya hotel owned by Xcaret. Local authorities are investigating the incident that left the female hotel employee dead.

On Tuesday night, a female employee of an Xcaret hotel was hit by a bus as she was crossing the road in a marked crossing area. While walking, a bus merging onto the same road hit her.

She was pronounced dead at the scene. In a briefing, the hotel said the incident happened at 11:40 p.m. when the woman left the hotel for the night.

“At 11:40 p.m. on Tuesday, December 2nd, a tragic incident occurred at the exit of one of our hotels in which a female employee lost her life after being struck by a vehicle entering the roadway as she crossed the pedestrian crosswalk,” Grupo Xcaret said in a statement.

“The Comprehensive Security team immediately activated established protocols and notified the authorities, who arrived at the scene to conduct the corresponding investigations and procedures.

“Grupo Xcaret deeply regrets the passing of our employee and extends its heartfelt condolences to her family and loved ones. From the outset and throughout this process, we will provide support and assistance to her family, with whom we maintain close contact to address any needs.

“We reiterate that the Group is providing all necessary assistance to the State Prosecutor’s Office for the investigation and the determination of responsibilities in accordance with current laws.

“In this regard, and out of respect for the victim’s family, we ask that you refrain from making speculations and allow the authorities to determine what is necessary.”
