Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Emergency personnel were sent to the scene of a two vehicle crash Monday night south of Playa del Carmen. One vehicle was found against the base of a metal highway sign. The other had been run off the road and into the trees.
The collision happened near Punta Venado, approximately 17 kilometers south of the city of Playa del Carmen. According to early information, the driver of a Tulum taxi is alleged to have made contact with the back end of a Chevrolet Aveo.

The force of the impact sent both vehicles off the road. The taxi was run into the trees while the driver of the car was flipped onto his side and into the base of a highway pole.

After the collision, the taxi driver fled the scene, abandoning his vehicle, however, his operating license with picture ID was found hanging from the mirror inside his cab.
The driver of the Aveo was able to exit his car on his own. He was treated roadside by paramedics from a responding ambulance. A hospital transfer was not required.
National Guard Highways arrived and took charge of the accident. Both vehicles were eventually towed, relieving highway traffic congestion. An official cause for the accident has not been determined.
