Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Inspectors from Civil Protection shut an island restaurant Friday for failing to have the necessary safety permits. Inspectors from Protección Civil and Bomberos Isla Mujeres placed closed seals across the Leidy palapa restaurant for the weekend, sending around 20 employees home.
The palapa restaurant is located on the island’s popular Playa Norte area and was reportedly closed for failing to have Civil Protection approval for the safe operation of the business.
Since Friday, the restaurant has remained closed to the public with seals and security tape preventing access through any of its entrances.
However, according to a restaurant employee who wished to remain anonymous, there is an ongoing ownership dispute over the restaurant and one of the involved parties has close ties with the municipal government.
According to the employee, after an exhaustive review by different inspectors, no irregularities were found, however, Civil Protection eventually arrived and sealed the restaurant closed.
