Police lay charges against group extorting Isla Mujeres tour company owner

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Three men and two women have been charged with extorting an Isla Mujeres tourist company. All five, according to local authorities, are part of a criminal group operating on the continental mainland of Isla Mujeres.

They are facing charges of extortion after threatening to kill a business owner if he did not pay them floor rights. The man they threatened owns a tour company that operates out of Costa Mujeres. According to police, the extorted victim made the payments for more than three years.

As for the group, “they allegedly threatened the owner of a tour sales business, demanding payment for “floor rights” under threat of depriving him of his life if he did not comply. The victim deposited the demanded money for more than three years,” police reported.

Raúl “N”, alias “Güero Palma”, leader of a criminal group dedicated to extortion in Costa Mujeres, as well as Axel Raúl “N”, Kevin Yahir “N”, Josefina Candelaria “N” and Kimberly “N”, have all been charged.

“At the time of their arrest, they were found with narcotics and a 9-millimeter caliber firearm,” police said in a statement.
