One critical and 12 injured in Riviera Maya highway crash

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — An early morning two vehicle highway accident in Riviera Maya left at least 13 injured. Motorists traveling the Playa del Carmen – Tulum highway at kilometer 248 around 6:00 a.m. were caught up in the accident.

A private SUV and company transport bus were the cause of the backed up cars after the SUV slammed into the bus. The Saturday morning crash had transit police and medical personnel attending to the scene.

Preliminary reports say the driver of the company bus was transporting hotel workers when it allegedly invaded the oncoming lane. In doing so, the fast moving SUV coming from the opposite direction hit the bus head on.

Police helped to remove the pinned driver of the SUV from behind the wheel of his crushed vehicle. Paramedics dealt with the 12 injured hotel workers aboard the bus. The driver of the SUV was rushed to hospital in critical condition.
