New underwater CFE lines confirmed for Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) has confirmed its plans to replace the underwater lines that supply electricity to Isla Mujeres.

La Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) says that the plans to replace the underwater cable will be next year in 2020. According to a statement by Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis, the new lines will have a greater capacity than the existing cables, which are more than 30 years old, he said.

The current underwater electricity cables came under scrutiny after numerous continual blackouts on the island, some of which lasted more than 12 hours.

At the beginning of August, la Comisión Federal de Electricidad launched an open competition bid for the replacement of the current underwater system. In early September, a bidding company was awarded the project, however, the name of the contracting company as well as the investment total have yet to be released.
