New long distance P’atal Maya Train car inaugurated

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — On Friday, a new Tren Maya car was inaugurated with a trip from Cancun to Merida. The new train, the P’atal, is for long distance travel and outfitted with sleepers.

It is the first time a long distance train has been put into operation since the Tren Maya began making daytrips earlier this year. The P’atal car was filled with government dignitaries who accompanied President López Obrador on what was his last trip as president.

Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa described the Friday trip as “a historic and exciting day,” as the group, which also included President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum, traveled to Merida.

The P’atal train, a Mayan word meaning “to stay,” was designed for long distance trips along the Tren Maya route. It includes cabins with seats that convert into beds so passengers can sleep during the journey.

Up until now, the trains used have been the Xiinbal Tren Maya cars meant for non-overnight travel. Authorities have not said if the overnight trains will put into full operation any time soon.

Earlier this week, the Maya Train station in Felipe Carrillo Puerto began operating. That station is now connected with other Quintana Roo stations including Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos and Cancun.
