Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Municipal head, Atenea Gómez Ricalde, has announced the appointment of Celestino Palomo Balam as the new Secretaría de Seguridad Pública and Tránsito.
Balam is taking over the position, replacing Edgar Amílcar Alonzo Paredes, the City Council reported Tuesday. Palomo Balam is a lifelong Quintana Roo resident who has worked in other municipalities and has extensive experience in operational police coordination.
Mayor Paredes pointed out that in 1991, Balam joined the Cancun Army and four years later, held the position of Directorate of Public Safety for the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto.
In 2002, he was selected to be part of the special state elite group called the Interinstitutional Police Force (FIP) in Chetumal where he remained until 2005.
During the brief Tuesday ceremony, Balam urged police officers to work in favor of citizens in addition to wearing the uniform with dignity.
