Navy responds to emergency medical call from cruise ship off Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres, Q. Roo.- The Ministry of the Navy of Mexico says they carried out a medical evacuation for a cruise ship passenger after receiving an emergency call from the ship’s captain. Navy personnel were called to Rhapsody of the Seas Sunday morning to remove a passenger who had been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in the right leg.

A navy medical crew located the ship 114 nautical miles (211 kilometres) from Isla Mujeres. The 43-year-old man from Costa Rica was removed from the ship and transferred to a navy vessel by the Naval Rescue and Health team where he was moved to a waiting ambulance at the pier of the Puerto Juárez Naval Station and taken to a Cancun hospital.
