Cancun, Q.R. — An American traveler has been detained inside the Cancun International Airport for traveling with unclaimed money. On Thursday, the SSPC (Secretaría de Seguridad y Protección Ciudadana) said an American passenger who had arrived from Miami was arrested after customs located over $32,000 USD in cash.
Personnel from the National Customs Agency of Mexico (ANAM) alerted National Guard personnel who detained the American man “who tried to enter to the country with $32,400 dollars in cash without declaring it,” the SSPC reported in their statement.
Cancun customs agents made the search after noticing “several wads of 100-dollar bills inside a fanny pack.” During a routine luggage inspection, the unclaimed money was found inside his fanny pack and inside in his carry-on hand luggage.
