Mexican Navy responds to sighting of 34 migrants off Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — The Secretary of the Navy rescued 34 drifters north of Isla Mujeres on Monday night. All 34 were found in good health and have since been turned over to INM.

The 33 men and one woman were rescued after Mexican port authorities were notified that a ship Comet located a small vessel at sea. On board were 34 people. Mexican Navy officials headed out to sea in two boats where they located Comet approximately 90 nautical miles (166.68 kilometers ) north of Isla Mujeres.

“It is important to mention that at all times we acted with adherence and respect for the human rights of the assisted foreigners who were transferred to the Puerto Juárez Naval Station where they were received by authorities of the National Institute of Migration (IMN) to carry out the corresponding legal procedures,” the Secretariat wrote in their statement.
