Large polar airmass to keep Yucatan Peninsula chilly for more days

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — A large mass of polar air that has been making its way toward the Yucatan Peninsula has arrived. Cold Front 24 has has left the region with dark skies and bouts of showers as well as a significant drop in daytime and nighttime temperatures.

“The cold air will maintain a cool to cold daytime environment in the states of the northwest, north, northeast and east of the Mexican Republic,” the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN) reported.

The SMN says the entry of humid air from the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea will cause heavy rains in Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Tabasco and Quintana Roo.

A new polar air mass entering the country Thursday will generate more strong winds and gusts in Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatan and Quintana Roo, as well as waves of 1 to 3 meters (m) high on the coasts of Tamaulipas, Veracruz and Quintana Roo.

Tulum Civil Protection is warning residents about a very cold night to come. “At night and dawn this weekend, a very cool to cold atmosphere is expected, so we recommend dressing appropriately,” they said Thursday.

Temperatures in Quintana Roo are expected to return to normal for the weekend as the cold air moves off.
