Judge related to Isla Mujeres kidnapping case suspended

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — A judge who is being investigated for allowing the release of two alleged kidnappers has been suspended from his post.

Judge Shelling Kierkegard Novelo Yeh of Juzgado del Sistema Penal Acusatorio, who was responsible for the release of two persons allegedly related to a kidnapping, has been suspended. Novelo Yeh was suspended after the Consejo de la Judicatura opened an investigation against him.

La Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE) has filed a complaint against the judge. According to a statement, Novelo Yeh will remain suspended from his duties pending the conclusion of investigations into the case.

The investigation began after Novelo Yeh allowed two subjects identified as Jorge Luis V.P. and Brandon Q.Z., released. The pair were arrested by la Policía Municipal de Isla Mujeres in a construction area of an upcoming hotel where they allegedly forced a man at gunpoint, to dig his own grave.

They were being held on kidnapping and attempted homicide charges. The judiciary council in Chetumal decided to temporarily suspend Novelo Yeh for “the probable commission of irregular acts in the performance of their duties.”
