Islanders voice complaints against Isla Mujeres hotel claiming public street for private parking

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Isla Mujeres islanders have voiced complaints online about a hotel that has claimed a public street for private parking. The situation has caused a bit of chaos at the northern end of the island due to the blocked off area.

The hotel has claimed the street for the private parking of its golf carts, which have been lined up in a tapped off area. Angry islanders denounced the bad practices of the hotel on a stretch of road that leads to Playa Norte.

According to information gathered, for several days, hotel staff have delimited street access with orange cones, tape and a sign “Parking Only For Golf Carts”, which is seen hanging off the back of a golf cart.

Area businesses have said the street is “restricted” by the hotel from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. when a hotel worker arrives to lay out the orange cones and yellow tape. During those hours, the hotel only permits golf carts and taxi access to potential restaurant beach customers.

Local authorities have not commented on the island parking problem.
