Isla Mujeres project to install new submarine cable begins

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — After years of suffering extended blackouts and other electrical glitches, work has begun on the replacement of the Isla Mujeres submarine cable. Workers began the project earlier this week on the island where they began trench digging work at Playa Norte.

The 277 million peso investment by the Federal Government will see the replacement of the more than 30 year old cable used today. The current work being done is the creation of a docking well that will hold the cable in place.

Work is also being done in the Punta Sam area where the cable will connect. Once complete, Isla Mujeres will have a new cable running from its municipal mainland to the island. The 6.9 kilometer long submarine cable CFE project is scheduled for completion by December 31 of this year.
